Evaluation

The theme of this short project was 'journey' and on the way to town a church caught my attention. So I took a few pictures of the windows and arches. I also took pictures of other old buildings that remind me of church windows because after drawing the shapes that I liked the most into my sketchbook I decided to stay with the window shapes.
My outcomes and final piece go well with my theme. Because this is a start project I wanted to use techniques that are fast and easy to do, so that I would be able to do more samples.
My tutor introduced me to mono-printing which I enjoyed the most throughout this project, not only because it's quick and easy to do but also because I enjoy drawing, so i would make use of this technique in the future too. In this project I have also used screen printing, embroidery  and dyes.
I looked at Elizabeth the 1st paintings (suggestion of one of my tutors). I like the the dresses of medieval times and Victorian times but as I researched more about the paintings I couldn't find a link to my work, except the skirt of the dresses remind me of the church windows. I then researched about medieval art and craft because of my drawings and my colour scheme. I like the medieval art and craft because of the architecture and other things that they created even in those condition that they live through at that time.
My first idea for my final piece at the start of this project was to make a curtain that had a big castle on it with in some of the windows have samples stitched at the back and the windows could be opened by a sash tied to the side. The background would be stormy  which I would make using watery dyes.
The only problem that I had throughout this project was that my screen had holes, which would let the colour through, so I had to cover them up with masking tape.
I would have created a patchwork out of my samples like a mood board (a fabric mood board) instead of sticking them in my book.

Step-by-Step to Final Piece Part 2

I looked back at my samples and used zigzag stitch, straight stitch and free embroidery to stitch onto my final piece. I used the already exiting window shapes to stitch over them.

Step-by-Step to Final Piece Part 3

I brushed some water in between the the window flower shaped design and using watery dyes I brushed yellow then red and then blue into it shape. I noticed that by some shapes the dye leaks out.

Using some of the left overs of some samples that were unsuccessful and didn't need them for this project. I wanted to use them and not leave them lying around so I decided that I will make flowers out of them. So I cut them out into window shapes.
I asked my tutor and a technician for advise and they show me how I can do them 3D.

Hand stitching the bottom of the window shapes and tied them together.

I placed them on in threes but after looking at my piece from a distance  and getting second options from classmates and my tutor who told me that the three flower petals are taking the attention  away from printed flowers. So I tried to put one petal in different angels over my work and the outcome was better. Using a needle and white thread I hand stitched them out.

History of medieval art and craft

There were many books in which the action took place in medieval times. There are also many stories about those times and about their charm. One of the things why medieval times are so popular is due to the garments that people used to wear. Although people were fairly primitive, medieval times had a special charm and romanticism that are still popular. Battles were something ordinary during medieval times and many people died because of that or because of diseases that at that time had no treatment.
People were so poor and they had to work a lot to survive and to raise their families. Usually, during medieval times, men went working, while women stayed at home with their children, taking care of them and cooking. In addition, people’s main source of income was agriculture. They had to crop vegetables and fruits, but it was a difficult work. Many kids were dying then as there were no medical resources that could save their lives. Religion was also very important during medieval times and one of the things that will never be forgotten is Inquisition. Medieval times clothing was representative for the social status of the people, so it was very easy to figure out how the life of someone was only looking at their clothes.
materials and the colors were also important for that. For example, silk was used only by the rich people and they usually were wearing  vivid colors. Today, medieval times are popular and are used for creating many art works or even fashion collections, which are great and very different from what is usually in fashion today.

The medieval times are perhaps one of the most interesting periods in history. Although it is also called the Dark Ages, medieval times still have a specific charm and appeal to many historians, architects and normal individuals. The medieval times are a period in the history of Europe that spans from the 5th to the 15th century. The medieval times are split into three main periods: early Middle Ages, high Middle Ages and late Middle Ages. Each of these medieval times had their own features in terms of literature, religion, architecture, social and economic life.
Aside from the military life, medieval times were also characterised by developments in philosophy and theology, thus the intellectual activity was intensely stimulated. In medieval times, philosophical discourse was stimulated by the rediscovery of Aristotle and his emphasis on empiricism and rationalism. Cathedral schools were also in turn replaced in the late 11th century by the universities established in major European cities.
Besides the universities, high medieval times had an influence on royal and noble courts. They saw the development of chivalry and the ethos of courtly love. This culture was expressed in vernacular languages rather than Latin, and comprised poems, stories, legends and popular songs spread by troubadours. Medieval times had a specific charm, even if people at that time were considered as cruel and barbarian in certain aspects. However, with all the developments made in that period, medieval times are still fascinating to study.
